Fall in Clark County is my favorite time of year, and I say that every year. The trees along Officers Row are turning gold, the pumpkin patches are open, and the community events are stacking on top of each other right when you need something to look forward to. Here are the five I’d put on your calendar first, plus everything else worth knowing about this fall.
My top five picks this fall
Number five: the Lough Legacy Veterans Day Parade. Free, meaningful, and one of the largest VA-sanctioned parades in the country. If you’re new to the area, this is where you’ll feel the community.
Number four: Cinema of Horrors in Ridgefield. The most original Halloween experience around, with costumed actors working between the cars while a horror movie plays on the big screen. Buy tickets early.
Number three: Halloween on Franklin Street. Free, running every night through October, with production quality that’s genuinely impressive. Bring the whole family.
Number two: BirdFest and Bluegrass at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Free, family-friendly, the sandhill cranes are back, and bluegrass plays all over town. This is Clark County at its best.
Number one: Bi-Zi Farms Pumpkin Patch. It’s open for the season now on NE 119th Street in Vancouver, and it’s the fall experience to build a weekend around. The pumpkin launcher alone is worth the trip. Get tickets online early, since the best weekends sell out.
More pumpkin patches, mazes, and hayrides. Pumpkin Lane at Pomeroy Farm in Yacolt runs weekends through October, $6 to $8, with a mile-long hayride past 100-plus pumpkin-people scenes. The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad also runs its Headless Horseman Halloween Train through the month, a seasonal favorite that sells out fast.
More Halloween happenings. The Clark County Historical Museum runs Haunted History Walking Tours through downtown Vancouver, Friday and Saturday nights, $20. Ilani’s Oktoberfest lands October 10, and the Camas Boo Bash follows on October 28. Since Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, check your own city’s trick-or-treat hours in Washougal, Ridgefield, Battle Ground, and downtown Vancouver, since the schedules shift a bit from a typical weeknight Halloween.
Markets and food worth planning around. Downtown Vancouver’s market at Esther Short Park runs through the end of October if you want one more trip before it closes for the season. Dine the Couve runs all month too, Vancouver’s dining month now in its eleventh year, with three courses for $33 at participating restaurants and a phone-based Restaurant Pass for prize drawings (DineTheCouve.com).
Heading into November. The Clark County Turkey Trot runs Thanksgiving morning along the Salmon Creek Trail, with proceeds going to the Clark County Food Bank. The Friday after Thanksgiving brings the Community Tree Lighting, Santa arriving by tugboat at Rotary Way Landing before the tree lighting at Esther Short Park. Downtown Camas holds its Holiday Sip and Shop November 12, followed by Little Box Friday and Small Business Saturday on the 27th and 28th.
This is what daily life looks like in Clark County: not just the housing, the schools, and the commute, but the community that shows up for each other every fall. If you’re thinking about making Clark County home, or you want to know which neighborhood puts you closest to the events you’d actually go to, we’d love to talk it through with you.
